Unpacking the Tom Mitchell trade bombshell
Why are we even indulging this?
So Fox Footy’s Tom Morris went On The Couch earlier tonight with Gerard Healy and dropped a huge Tom Mitchell bombshell. Essentially our Brownlow medallist is open to being traded if the club sought to move him on.
GERARD HEALY:
“So what do you mean he is happy at the Hawks but he wants to go?”
TOM MORRIS:
“I’m not saying he wants to go, I’m saying…”
GERARD:
“What are you actually saying – is he on the market or is he not on the market?”
TOM:
“Nah he’s on the market for the right deal and if Hawthorn say so, so there’s mutually beneficial arrangements and trades as you know Gerard where a player is happy to go like Shaun Higgins or he is happy to stay, this is one of those situations – it’s not like Treloar at Collingwood where he doesn’t want to go or the player wants to go and the club won’t let them.”
GERARD:
“Who is driving it Tom because you have a story so someone must be driving it?”
TOM:
“No one is physically driving it yet, but Tom Mitchell is the one that would be happy to go if Hawthorn came to him and said we are thinking about this, and at the end of the year I’d anticipate that that’s a good chance to happen.”
Let’s unpack the other stuff he had to say:
“I can tell you tonight that under the right circumstances, Tom Mitchell is open to being traded at the end of the season. He has two years left on his deal and is very happy at the Hawks, but if the situation arose to join Richmond or another Victorian club powerhouse in the window, he would not say no.”

“It is important to understand that this is early days and no one is driving this here. Mitchell doesn’t want to necessarily leave straight away. Hawthorn’s not trying to push him out, but this will gather speed towards the back end of the year.”

“The Tigers have two first round picks and another two second rounders of draft capital that may entice hawthorn.”

“I have spoken to managers today, I have spoken to people at Hawthorn, and they all say that it’s likely that the Hawks will look at moving on an established player at the end of the year.
Everyone has said that hey? Amazing they “all say” we are moving an established player. So many snitches.
“Now this might not be Tom Mitchell as a first priority. It could be Chad Wingard or Jack Gunston, Jaeger O’Meara – they are all contracted, even Luke Breust is contracted as well but as I said, if the club came to Mitchell at the end of the year with a mutually beneficial arrangement – similar to what North Melbourne did with Shaun Higgins and sent him to Geelong last year, I don’t think Tom Mitchell will be saying no.”

“I think that Tom Mitchell wants to stay in Victoria, he’s already moved away from home in Sydney, he grew up for a short period of time in Perth as well, and Richmond have this draft capital that Hawthorn would like if they are trying to rebuild through the draft as we know they are.”

“So two first round picks, two second round picks and Mitchell if he wants to go anywhere, wants to go to a place where he can win a flag – he’s all about winning a premiership and he wants to stay in Victoria as well – if he was to go anywhere aside from Hawthorn.”
