Great recap again lads. Lots of valid comments here too. I’m positive about the way we responded to not being allowed to play our preferred style, they didn’t allow us to get them outside (maybe that extra width at the G would’ve helped us?) yet we still had enough players roll their sleeves up and give us a chance. I was particularly pleased to see a few of our players who made obvious errors, not completely go into their shells.

With regards to the ‘hate’ coming our way, I’m 100% behind the thinking that this is one of the best signs from our season. They know we’re back and they desperately want us to fail. Bring on 2025, the wave of Hok will roll on

I have a signed picture of Dermott running through the huddle, can we get some merch of Sicily ripping into that dog Hinkley while chairing punky off?

I wasn't sure I was ready to listen but I'm glad I did. #sicilyfe

Whilst Sicily’s & Moore’s posters are getting mentioned, I was more concerned with the earlier turnovers by

1. Newcombe - his kick to the midfield that led to Rioli goal on half time. It was the Scrimshaw kick from earlier in the season.

2. Hardwick kicking into the head of a Port player which rebounded for another goal.

Both were from marks with no direct immediate pressure - “control the controllables” - and both are leaders.

We touched on these too, but the Moore and Sicily misses happened when the game was absolutely there to be won, so they carried a little more weight as far as I was concerned.

I get the "recency" bias as being the last chance to seal the game, however if the earlier errors aren't made then there is no need for the saving shot at goal.

Put this down to a cricket biased background when the last wicket can't win/save the game after the batters haven't done their job earlier.

In the broader discussion on the Sicily shot as Brad mentioned, it was outside 50 at the end of the game. (He also missed two outside 50 shots against the Blues when it didn't matter to the result.)

Different to cricket though, because generally your worst batsmen comes in as part of your last wicket partnership. Here we’re talking our vice-captain and captain. In cricketing terms, they’re hardly Chris Martin or Glenn McGrath with the bat.

Given that Sicily is probably the only player from a set shot that I'd give a 60/40 chance from 50+m, he carried an expectation that others wouldn't have.

Hardwick and Newcombe are leaders as well, whilst leadership doesn't make you immune from skill/execution errors, it should impact your decision-making. and appreciation of the game situation.

The Lions result was more attuned to the last kick being undoubtedly the most important because they were never in the game until that point of the game.

100% Agree - Sicily & Moore’s shots are NOT the reason for our loss. A team effort was required for more of the game. I thought Port played the better pressure game. Too many of our Hawks were not at their best which cost us. The 2 points you raise really hurt and were preventable with composure.

I'm not sure anyone sad they were the reason for the loss, but the win was there for the taking when the misses occurred.

I'm not really understanding why any individual efforts are being talked about, when we didn't turn up for the 1st quarter and a half. We actually play footy at the start, and we win. Simple as that. That's not me being negative either. Well it is. But I'm not trying to have a go at the team. We have had a real crack in most games since round 6. And had a magnificent ride. It's been a massive year. An entertaining season. And I can't wait for next year.

I am sad that the wild ride has ended and I must admit I was daring to dream. From where we started to where we ended, I am really happy and grateful for the journey. Really hoping 2025 is our year and we take the inches required to win the tough games and mental game. I finish 2024 as a PROUD member of my beloved club.

I’ve got a very different take on Ken. much as I disagree with how Hinkley behaved I think we can’t dismiss Hinkley as a coach.

He took a list full of holes to a top two position and was able to create a narrative for his team out of an innocuous Instagram post that in no way directly mentioned his team.

That is the art of motivational coaching.

I also have no doubt that had Ginni not made that post that Ken would have created a narrative out of something else so I am by no means blaming Jack for the loss.

As much as Ken’s post game performance was deplorable, his pre match performance was outstanding.

Ports performance is a testament to this.

As Brad said, the fact that we only lost by 3 points highlights what amazing progress we made.

The venom with which opposition Twitter has subsequently attacked Hiokball just proves we’re not alone in that assessment.

Hokball has arrived and the rest of the league is terrified of what’s to come

Good chat. Thing I keep thinking about is Sam’s objective to build a game plan that would stand up in finals. So was it the game plan or the players that couldn’t handle the pressure?

We're not the finished product, coach, players or game plan, so I wouldn't be looking to attribute responsibility to any one thing just yet. The game plan, when executed, works. We saw that against the Bulldogs.

So by that analysis it’s not the game plan it’s the players. Hopefully maturity fixes that. I would like to see some evidence of it working under more pressure than the dogs can muster.

It worried me all year this kicking around the corner from slight angles would cost us a game, both Moore (poster) and Ginnivan (complete miss) should have kicked conventionally IMO and at worst achieved the same result, Sicily swinging out as he kicked was also poor execution as the ball went where his body was pointing. Despite not playing well for large periods of time we had our chances in the last quarter and fluffed our lines. We might have practiced saving a lead but did we practice winning when behind?

I have only just had the mental strength to engage with what happened last Friday.

Listening to the pod and reading the comments had me wondering whether I had missed something. I was at the ground with the cheer squad and before the game even started, I was worried more about the ground and the ground conditions. I did not think that the ground was as narrow as it was and surface was damp and slippery. We were trying to work out how that was possible given he day was fine, windy and 17 degrees.

Yes, Port hit us hard in the first quarter and controlled the clearances, but did you notice how many times our players were caught along the wing arcs between half back and and half forward. Players were running out of space and doubled back trying to re-release with handballs only to be caught holding the ball. It was also hard to bounce the ball which skidded off the surface.

Notice, I have not mentioned the umpiring , but as I remarked to the group, we can't play our usual game, this game will be a slog. The width that our players needed was not there and the going was slowed by the slippery conditions. Add to this the fierce intent of the Port players and the Port crowd was going to make this one hell of a tough game to win.

What the boys put out there during the next three quarters was fantastic. Every time Port kicked away to fifteen plus points, we hit back hard and hit the front a couple of times. In the final quarter, Port got that breathing space with only minutes to go, but the boys kept fighting and hit the post, ran into an open goal and missed but when Sicily had the ball I thought ...another Johnny Barker finish...

Alas not to be , but as much as the media would like, we diid not lose because of a Ginny comment. We lost because we had to play the game in conditions that did not suit us. The boys tried their hearts out in the almighty slog that night and will be mentally tougher for the experience.

It is almost mandatory for Hawthorn success to have a gut wrenching loss before that success. The preliminary final against Collingwood comes to mind when Luke Ball's kick went sailing over my head for the winning goal and Buddy collapsed to the ground clutching his knee!

Go Hawks.
