Some observations on player assessment:

* Finn/Rioli contest - IMO the key impact of Rioli is not the possessions, but the metres gained and run he provides. With this being the case, Rioli was 6/14 in disposals with about 260 metres gained against his season average 400 metres. From memory, there was one run of note along the Warne wing in the first quarter, which leads to the next point.

* Brockman - I agree with Ash on the lack of urgency demonstrated. With Rioli tagged, Banks became their runner off half back and set up their first goal with his drive out to Riewoldt who passed to Graham. (Banks was still an open option in the pocket for Riewoldt.) It was clear that the Tigers had done their "what ifs", so not being aware of how they would respond shows a level of application. As to his 2nd goal, it was more the vision of Wingard to spot him up from a centre square clearance.

* Sicily and Ward - Sicily did give away a free on the wing for mouthing off, but more egregious and can/will be lost, given when it happened, Ward waltzing through the mark to give Soldo a 50m penalty when 30m out had more direct impact on the game. I'm pretty sure that Tigers would have had him 50/50 from 30m out.

* Day - the contest before the last goal is an interesting one and will look at elsewhere, but why was he punching the ball to the middle of the ground? (Nash was, at least, looking to punch it to the boundary.)

On the sub discussion, I don't know that we have a young game breaker on the list. Bailey MacDonald coming straight off half back is able to run forward, but his disposal is "erratic" at times. Of those not playing yesterday, Butler is probably the closest option in terms of skill set.

I think you covered the result really well and you raise a VERY good point about the use of the sub. I agree there is no point bringing on a developing player for a small part of the game. A game breaker or steadier is the better option. If the kids are any good, they need to think their way through the game (with mature head guidance) and learn resilience which is what premierships are made of. In fact, the Hawks should be made to watch EVERY Collingwood FC game and analyse why the Pies are Soooooooo Good and discuss what we need to do to become a Premiership team. I can’t see the Pies losing the GF, and they have managed to achieve their standing in 2 year.

The only positive out of yesterday was the result dropping essendon further down the ladder.

Nice work guys. I feel your pain. This one really got away.

Footy is mostly played between the ears.

At the MCG - the Tiger crowd are also a factor.

Looks like our guys surprised themselves to be out in front and then the yips set in

Breust's miss, Day punching it towards the Tiger goal???? etc. etc.

This is VAFA Division 4 stuff

Our best is really good. You can see the sketch of some really good years coming

Games like this show you how close we are...just 2 or 3 tweaks to the line-up and...

But our worst is truly horrible and we are prone to collective brain fades

We are a below average last quarter team. I believe it is our worst for win/loss.

The mental fortitude to concentrate and stay up for a full game is missing

Time and experience should fix this... but it may not.

Talent is there - save a couple of holes

Conditioning is getting there

Game plan is on the right track

Mental toughness is something to work on - probably the hardest and most important

Get the last one right and we win the close ones and we don't get blown away in a quarter.
