Hawthorn have become Honourable Loss FC, jumping the Dogs early but coming up short against a more experienced side. The HI team break down the R7 defeat, while looking at the many positives.
I was rapt in the effort and to be in the game for so long was terrific. Hate to blame the umpires, but the non-marks to Brocky and Fergus in Q3 were critical, particularly as they received goals from questionable free kicks. Chad had 17 possession, 8 marks and 2 tackles, which follows his 16 possession and 5 tackles against Adelaide the previous week - he's doing ok and if he can get a run of games, should improve. You'd think that it will take a few weeks for the new look Lewis led forward line to gel, having played the pervious 6 weeks without him. The two big highlights for me were, firstly, our midfield taking it right up to a midfield that is considered to be one of the best in the comp and the performance of Big Ned in just his 24th game against one of the game's top ruckmen. To be carrying the ruck with so little inexperience and to be consistently improving is really exciting.
You are correct - would be nice to get “legitimate” frees and marks paid especially in the front half…. What have we done to warrant the wrath of multiple umpires over the years :(
When the focus of the player review moves to skill and decision making issues rather than application and effort, it demonstrates a progression in the team’s performance.
I am starting to think that we need to issue “kicking licences” like the old pen licence back in the day. By why of example, Sicily, Hardwick, Amon, Day, Newcombe, Breust, Scrimshaw, Impey would have an open licence whereas Frost, Reeves, Worpel, Morrison would some with a level of restriction e.g. distance or game situation.
On Seamus Mitchell, he may move to the wing having learned to play defensively competing with Morrison. Personally, as Danny says I think Mitchell has more AFL aspects than Bramble, who tends to make execution/decision errors. He is certainly prepared to tackle with vigour.
It hasn’t been widely commented but Reeves took his first Big Boy defensive mark in the last quarter which has been a call amongst the fans this year.
I concur on Ramsden being given more time - he doesn’t have the body strength ATM for the big bodied AFL defender. I suspect his selection may have been as much a rocket for Meek with the Freo game coming this week.
Thank GOD we have Lewis back. Greene probably needs 3 weeks to get used to playing with Lewis and we will be a happy team at Hawthorn. I also thought Breust improved with Lewis back but appears to have lost some speed and endurance this year (struggles chasing). I gave Worpel my MPV vote this week (I almost always give it to Will Day and wanted to share my love)……………I would have dragged CJ instead of Mitchell, compare their stats which are similar with CJ playing an extra half of footy. CJ looks lost on the field this year and IMO would benefit from a month in the 2’s. Reeves is definitely improving but can’t chase, just wondering if losing 2-3 kg would help? #GoHawks

Thanks guys. Agree with lots of points but not all.
Lots of positives and we are on the way.
Dogs easy a Top 8 team.
Strong mids and good forwards we were always going to struggle to hold them
Improvement is accelerating.
We should beat Fremantle this week.
