Pretty much every club has their trade table success stories and the Hawks certainly have reaped the rewards of their wheeling and dealing with rival clubs.

Much of it was during the Alastair Clarkson era but even before then, some great players found their way to the club and played important roles.

Hawthorn’s story is not complete without them.

Backs

Brent Guerra (St Kilda): Curbed his excesses once he got to the Hawks and was a skilful and reliable defender who could read the play superbly. I wanted him at the Hawks when he left Port, but the Saints got in first. Hawks likely win the 2012 flag had he not been missing through injury.

Brian Lake (Western Bulldogs): The first of the pre-agents. Brilliant move by the club and the player. Three flags and a Norm Smith Medal for the missing piece of the premiership puzzle.
