Round 8 — Hawthorn v Richmond
Sunday, May 4, 3:20pm @ MCG
We bank the 4 points and move on! Not much more needs to be said after we got back on the winners’ list with a 50-point win over the Eagles. Unfortunately, Jack Scrimshaw and Karl Amon will miss this week’s 100-year anniversary match against the Tigers after both suffered head knocks. Scrimshaw is the bigger concern, as it’s his second concussion in six weeks.
Box Hill had a big win against Port Melbourne, with a few players putting their hands up for selection this week against Richmond.
A special mention to the club for a fantastic week leading up to our 100-year anniversary. It was brilliant to see so many club legends at the club during the week, and we can’t wait to see them, along with all the former players, at the game on Sunday.
Box Hill had a another big win and important win in the VFL, this time against Port Melbourne in Wonthaggi. Finn Maginness was the standout, finishing the top ranked player on the ground in disposals with 38, contested possessions (14), inside 50s (8) and clearances (10); on top of this, Maginness was the equal #1 player on the ground for score involvements (5) and equal #2 in tackles (6). That is some sort of push for a recall. Jasper Scaife kicked 6 goals, while Changkouth Jiath was important off half back with 26 disposals and a equal game-high 7 rebound 50s.
🛡️ Defence:
As mentioned above, Scrimshaw and Amon will miss due to concussion, which is a big loss. The depth in defence at the club is strong, but I’m not sure two defenders will come in this week.
One of Frost, Jiath or Serong will likely make the cut. I think Hardwick should play down back for the entire game, with Maginness or Scaife coming in as a forward. Bailey Macdonald deserves another shot in the 23 this week.
⚙️ Midfield:
It was great to see Henry Hustwaite come in and seize his opportunity against the Eagles. He found a lot of the footy and showed he belongs at the level. He’ll need to back it up again this week, but the real test will come in Rounds 9 and 10 against Melbourne and Gold Coast, both of whom have strong midfields.
It was also good to see the likes of Mackenzie and Ward rack up strong tackle numbers against the Eagles. The midfield is still a big concern with Day and Nash out, and it will continue to be tested over the next few weeks.
🤾♂️ Ruck:
Meek absolutely dominated Matt Flynn last week. This week will be much tougher against Richmond captain Toby Nankervis.
“Nank” is a very physical ruckman who can push forward and kick goals. Meeky is going to earn his pay this week!
⚡ Forwards:
A solid return from Jack Ginnivan last week. Most impressive were his 7 tackles! Old man Jack Gunston continues to amaze, and is now equal 5th in the Coleman Medal race. He’s kicked 13 goals in the last three weeks.
It was great to see Calsher Dear return for Box Hill last week. He only played a half but looked fit. I wouldn’t rush him back this week. He’ll likely play a full game in the VFL this weekend, and if he gets through, he can return next round against the Demons.
Ben Ronke of the Week

When a milestone game comes around a lot of people believe in the theory that the players should be extra motivated to play well ... and if this special historical game isn't one of those, I don't know what is!!! But having said that, hopefully it won't be too much pressure for our boys, as imagine playing in front of all the former players, coaches and associated members of this great "Family Club" that will be there watching! I for one, am very much looking forward to it and have faith in this current team that they will get the job done.
So far, the HFC have done an amazing job of promoting this game and the way they have welcomed anyone and everyone who have been a part of the past 100 years to share in and celebrate this milestone is a credit to the Club. I congratulate all involved that have spent many months planning the events and I hope the HI community will enjoy all the pre-match entertainment ... GO HAWKS!!!
Freudian slip - no Jiath in Brad’s interchange for what “will” happen.
