The Hunt for Redemption

4-1! Our first loss of the season was a poor one. After having over two weeks to prepare for Port Adelaide we failed to turn up and copped our right whack going down in the end by five goals. Having been down by 71 points in the second quarter, it was good to see some fight in the second half.

The real test will come this week and how the team bounce back against a stronger side. Geelong are a much better side than Port Adelaide and are in great form. Their best defender Tom Stewart will also return.

For us, it will be great to get Jack Scrimshaw and Connor Macdonald back. Selection this week will be a very interesting watch. After last week’s performance, at least two of the following will be omitted:

Finn Maginness. Josh Ward. Harry Morrison. Changkuoth Jiath. Jack Ginnivan. Mabior Chol. Luke Breust.

🚰 Defenders 🚰

Having only conceded over 80 points once in the our first four matches, the Power kicked over 120 points! This wasn’t entirely on the backline as the midfield got smashed, especially in the first half.

Scrimshaw will return this week, which means James Sicily or Josh Weddle will need to play forward unless CJ gets omitted.

The Dangerfield match-up this week is going to cause big headaches. It will likely be Scrimshaw. I think Sam Frost is actually the best match-up but he won’t be selected.

🧍🏽 Midfield 🧍🏽

Is Will Day fit yet?? The midfield performance in the first half against Port Adelaide was inexcusable. Not a single player stood up and they couldn’t handle the heat.

Jai Newcombe was excellent in the second half and it was good to see Dylan Moore spend some time in the guts. He needs to play that role again this week.

Bailey Smith and Max Holmes are in brilliant form and will need to be stopped for us to win this match. Tom Atkins will run with Newcombe, so the likes of Cam Mackenzie, James Worpel, Conor Nash (if fit) and Josh Ward (if he holds his spot) will need to lift!

🤴🏻 Ruck 🤴🏻

Lloyd Meek and Jordan Sweet had a great battle all night and I thought Meek was one of our better players on the night.

Geelong don’t have a stand alone ruck. They will play a mix of Rhys Stanley and Sam De Koning.

This is a game where Meek needs to use his size and use his physically from the opening bounce.

👴🏻 Forwards 👴🏻

Rookie Jack Gunston, take a bow. A bag of six! Whilst that was great see, we simply can’t be relying on Gunston to be our best forward every week.

Mabior Chol had a shocker for the second straight game and needs to lift big time.

With Calsher Dear due back in a few week’s Chol’s spot will come under pressure. Jack Ginnivan is another one who has had a poor start to the season.

It will be good to have Connor MacDonald and his class back this week.
