After a first half of footy that can only be described as ugly (at best), it is time to have a look at how each of our individual players rated.
And it’s not going to be pretty reading.
Despite a spirited second half performance the damage was already done, so here, we present to you … the blood (aka, what you have been baying for) 🧛♂️
It really does reflect our first half performance so keep it in mind when throwing daggers at the author!
Lachie Bramble – 6/10
One of the few players who gets a pass mark on the night. Worked hard to make space on the wing and was constantly running and looking for space, often pushing back to try and become an option out of defence. Led the team for marks with seven (five was the next best), had 16 disposals at 87% efficiency and again will be much much better for the run.
Luke Breust – 4/10
Managed his two goals for the game but literally did not much else. Kicked from 50 metres out on a tight angle for our first goal of the game, before a trademark Luke Breust goal in the third where he turned his man inside out and snapped truly. Other than those two moments, had no impact on proceedings.
Shaun Burgoyne – 400/10
How could we not? Okay, he wasn’t great. Okay, he fumbled and missed the ball a few times. Okay, he went forward and should have - but couldn’t - convert for a fairytale goal. But none of that mattered. It was his night. He was humble in the lead-up, he was humble before the game, and he was humble as he was chaired off. What a champion - a worthy celebration of what #Silk400 has meant and means to the game of Australian Rules Football.
Jonathon Ceglar - 5/10
Beaten by Scott Lycett in the ruck contest proper, but probably shaded Port’s big man around the ground. To the tune of ‘Hokey Pokey’: 🎶 He has one good game (IN), he has a bad game (OUT), good (IN), bad (OUT) get Jon Ceglar out. It’s time to bring in Ned and leave him in the team, that’s what our future’s about. 🎶
Sam Frost 3/10
Not his fault he gets such a poor score because as always, he tried his heart out. But why on earth was Frost forced to man up on Charlie Dixon, when Kyle Hartigan is our designated beast-taker? It didn’t make sense as Dixon easily managed 4.2 on the scoreboard. It had a whiff of Dawson on Rocca, with the refusal to shuffle the cards down back. Had nine clangers on the night, gave away five free kicks and went at an awful 56% disposal efficiency. Eeewwwww 🤮
Damon Greaves – 5/10
Feel a bit for Damon who hopefully had the same number of pairs of undies as he did moments where he s*&t himself (harsh?). Unfortunately there were a few shocking moments including one play where he was running and inexplicably dropped the ball, but momentum still took him about five metres past the play. Saved himself with some good ball use at times, and gets a pass for the fact he still got it 18 times. He deserves a number of games in a row to showcase his talent at the level.
Kyle Hartigan – 6/10
Our best key defender on the night making it even more puzzling that he wasn’t playing on Charlie Dixon. His 11 spoils were the most on the ground ahead of Tom Jonas (seven) and Aliir Aliir (six), while his nine intercepts was also a game-high. You know what you’re going to get with Hartigan. Will likely remain a fixture of the team for the next few years.
Blake Hardwick – 5.5/10
A solid display from Hardwick who again registered more metres gained from his possessions than any other Hawk on the field - this week racking up 521 of them. Nine behinds to the Power and subsequent kick-ins helped Blake get to 22 disposals. Was effective with his ball use more often than not.
Daniel Howe – 4/10
A beautiful goal on the run from 45 metres out at the 10-minute mark of the third quarter was a highlight on a quiet night for Howe. That goal stopped a run of nine unanswered from the Power and was exceptionally executed. Unfortunately outside of the goal Howe failed to have the usual impact he has had in most matches through 2021. He was well down on his averages in most areas.
Changkuoth Jiath – 4/10
Command C, Command V. So many of the players against Port can have the same descriptions of their game applied: having a great season, but unfortunately was down on his usual output. That’s the case for CJ who tried hard to break the game open, tried to burst through and provide run and carry, but it just didn’t seem to work. When he would get past one player there was always a second line of defence in the Power zone, and that made it tough for him to have his usual impact.
Jacob Koschitzke – 4/10
Oh Kosi. Five marks and seven touches in a game where we just couldn’t get our forward set-up right. Kicked a goal in the final term after marking on a fair angle in the pocket at Marvel, before then going on to miss a more regulation shot nine minutes later. Intent is there, however his set shots continue to be a concern.
Ben McEvoy – 5/10
Not our worst player but had little impact on the game due to an increased amount of time spent forward. Given the limited opportunity he didn’t see much of it, but was good with it when he found the ball and when he was pushed into the ruck to relieve Cegs. Hard to be too critical given the slow movement in transitioning the ball up forward.
Tom Mitchell – 7.5/10
Our best player on the night, and worked hard in the third quarter to drag our team back into the contest. Was our highest ball winner with 29 touches, including 13 contested possessions, eight clearances and six inside-50s. Was our second highest ranked player for metres gained and battled gallantly all night.
Dylan Moore – 2/10
From “four goal superhero” to “not much going on superzero” - it was a quiet day at the office for Moore in probably his worst game of the year to date. Failed to impact the scoreboard, and had 10 disposals - only THREE of which were effective. Was a victim of the slow ball movement out of the backline, and is allowed a quiet game, but wouldn’t want to back this up with a solid outing next week against Freo.
Connor Nash – 1/10
Please please please. End the experiment now. Nash offers us precious little - especially when he is brought into the team and plays a different role to the one that sees him dominate at Box Hill. Finished with eight touches - including a beautiful handball to set up play off half back in the final quarter - but offered us precious little otherwise. The very definition of a list-clogger. It is time to pull the plug and put a line through him as an AFL footballer.
Jai Newcombe – 4.5/10
What has become very clear since his debut against Sydney is Jai is still very much learning his craft and with that in mind we have every intention of remaining patient. Didn’t see too much of it with only 11 disposals, but encouragingly managed seven effective tackles which showed he was hunting the ball and accountable around packs and stoppages. Like Bramble, will absolutely be better with another game under his belt.
Tim O’Brien – 2/10
Oh yeah. That’s right. Almost. Timmy managed to take five marks for the game and at least led out of the forward line a few times, but he failed to really clunk the one or two we needed him to. Managed a goal with a handball receive cherry over the top in the goal square, but had his fair share of clangers, turnovers and on-the-fulls. Finished the game with 12 disposals, of which only six where effective which is a worry. His foot skills are normally not too bad so when he is not bringing down big marks, and he is turning it over with poor skills, we have a bigger problem than normal.
Jaeger O’Meara – 4/10
Poor game from Jaeger who only managed 17 possessions and failed to be the bull that Ollie Wines was for the Power. JOM had four scoring shots for the game - three in the first quarter which were all registered behinds, and our last goal of the game 30 minutes into the final term. We were crying out for support in the middle of the ground and for someone to impact the contest - unfortunately it wasn’t Jaeger who stood up.
Tom Phillips – 4/10
Another disappointing performance from our recruit, who was pretty much unsighted for most of the match. Finished the game with 15 possessions and actually a high disposal efficiency, but it was the ones he butchered - an on-the-full and a long raking kick to a Port player with no one within 20 metres - that stand out. Time to start discussing his role for Box Hill? No doubt Brad has plenty to think about come Thursday morning’s Selection Dissection.
Jack Scrimshaw – 5/10
Another who can be forgiven for the low output compared to what we have been seeing in the past few weeks, but it was un uncharacteristically quiet night for Scrimma. Still went at 93% efficiency and managed five marks but was clearly impacted by not having his usual supporting runners in Will Day and Jarman Impey beside him 😢
Liam Shiels – 3/10
Meh. Not a game he would want to remember for anything other than being given the honour of carrying Silk off in game 400. Had 18 touches at 38% (yes 38%) disposal efficiency. Recorded five tackles but didn’t bring much to the table in a midfield that was behind the eight ball all night. Did we mention he chaired Burger off the ground?
James Worpel – 7/10
Worked super hard and was definitely in our best few players on a night which saw Worps stationed in periods across half-forward as well as through the middle. With 23 touches and a goal he can be pleased with his haul for the evening as he led the team for tackles (eight) and clearances (nine). Needs to keep this level of output up in matches when JOM and Mitchell are performing at their peak and we will have a solid midfield unit.
Mostly fair. I would not have wanted to play forward for Hawthorn on Saturday night. A big tick on Nash, yes, END THE EXPERIMENT, he is not an AFL player. Some of the boys deserve some time at Box Hill or off.
Need to remember someone like Kosi - he has played 14 of 16 weeks - he's 20 anf no matter what he looks like - physically and mentally he is still maturing and probably needs a spell a this stage.
