So … how was your Saturday afternoon?
The less said about the game the better, but let’s get stuck in to each of our players and how they performed individually.
Do you think 7/23 pass marks is being too generous? Who would you rate differently? Check out our ratings here:
Lachie Bramble – 8.5/10
Depending on which way you swing, Lachie was either our best or second best on ground. We are going with best on. Was cool, composed and measured, mopping up and proving to be a reliable commodity around the half back flank and wing. His importance was magnified with CJ and Scrimma succumbing to injury, and he finished the game with 27 touches, six marks eight rebounds from 50 and going at 85% disposal efficiency. Had the most metres gained for us with 550. Looking the goods.
Luke Breust – 2.5/10
Tough to be part of our forward line in this match, but Breusty gave us very little in Launceston. He had two shots at goal including a set shot from 50 metres out which he couldn’t convert, and every time it looked like he may break through a tackle to create something he was pinned down. Having a pretty good year so can be forgiven.
Tyler Brockman - 4/10
Finished the game with 14 touches but didn’t really have any impact on the contest. A couple of flashes that reminded us of why we were so excited watching Brocky in the early rounds of the season. Expecting to see him get a chain of games in the seniors which means he should be given leniency in terms of his overall match day contribution.
Shaun Burgoyne – 2.5/10
Hmmmm. Had 12 possessions on the day as he continues to limp toward Kevin Bartlett’s games tally. The most optimistic of supporters will have taken the same view as my 12-year old son who said, “But he played on Travis Colyer and what did he do?” What did either of them do to be honest - it was effectively 21 v 21. It’s sad to see Burger as a shadow of the player we remember but clearly we are lacking leadership down back and he is seen as an integral part of that on-field leadership group.
Jonathon Ceglar - 4/10
Started the game on fire around the ground, but by the time the final siren went he had been given an absolute towelling by Sean Darcy - who may have been the best player on the ground. But in the space of one week my thinking around Ned v Cegs has changed. Will we see Reeves protected over the next 18 months at Box Hill given how young he is? Will Sammy want him to play with Ned under his nose so he can coach the young ruckman first-hand in the VFL? Will be interesting to see how this pans out, but when you are constantly being smashed in the middle something has to give - that something should be Cegs.
Sam Frost 6/10
Played with his usual amount of heart and desire and was one of only a handful of players that could hold their heads high. Frosty took seven marks for the game equalling the most he has taken in a game this year, and his eight intercepts and five intercept marks were both team-highs for the match. Also went at 90% disposal efficiency which is one of the usual knocks on him, so all-in-all had a good day out.
Damon Greaves – 6/10
Given another chance thanks to the late withdrawal of Dimma Harwick and acquitted himself fairly well. Had 20 touches at 85% efficiency and managed five rebounds for the day. Regained some of the composure that seemed to allude him against the Power and with our long list of injured backmen is sure to be in the team against the Demons next week.
Ollie Hanrahan - 1/10
Have taken into account that Hanrahan was the medical sub, but he still managed to get half a game of footy under his belt. Should also take into account that he was played deep in a forward line that was disconnected from our dysfunctional midfield, but Ollie only managed three touches from 50 minutes of on-field time.
Kyle Hartigan – 4/10
Battled hard but was up against it all day against Rory Lobb who ended up being the dominant forward on the ground. Had more spoils than any other Hawk, and was in more one-on-one contests than any other player, which is a reflection of just how tough it was with the ball coming inside defensive 50 so often. To be fair to Hartigan, after three goals in the first term he was then held to one more for the remainder of the day.
Daniel Howe – 2/10
Was on fire in the early stages of the opening term which makes his fadeout from the game even more noticeable. Finished with only 10 touches, and gives him back-to-back poor matches after a string of decent performances. Another player on the watch list given the coaching handover plan. Hopefully he gets another chance against the Dees.
Denver Grainger-Barass - NA
DGB is this week’s beneficiary of the no rating in your second game rule. And thank goodness for that. Found the going a bit tougher this time around but still managed to pull in five marks which would have helped with his confidence.
Emerson Jeka - 5/10
Pass mark for Jek who managed two goals and worked hard up the ground. His first goal will definitely be one for the highlights reel with Lachie Bramble spoiling, going on an amazing run before Jek sealed the deal. Great for his confidence as well having kicked 0.7 in the reserves last week. Another player who needs to be given a number of weeks in the team.
Changkuoth Jiath – 6/10
What a sad day seeing CJ again succumbing to injury - and one that appears to potentially be season-ending. He tried so hard in the first half with 18 touches and seven marks, while also registering six rebounds from defensive 50. Despite the 58% game time he still had seven intercepts (when the game high was nine), and joins the list of Day, Hardwick, Scrimshaw, Impey and Sicily to be spending time in the stands.
Jacob Koschitzke – 5/10
Two goals, 11 touches, and six marks was a good recovery for a player who had 0, 0 and 0 in the first quarter. Kosi again presented well, worked hard and gave it his all in the second half which was a rare sight from a player in the brown and gold. Half of his touches were contested, and he kicked for goal well which has been one of my knocks on him in recent weeks.
Ben McEvoy – 4/10
Part of the ruck combination wth Cegs that was slaughtered by Darcy on the day, Big Boy failed to have an impact when up forward or in the ruck. Had his chance when he missed a regulation set shot to put us within 15 points in the second quarter, before the ball ended straight up the other end where a David Mundy goal gave the Dockers some breathing space by extending the margin to 26. Attended 25 ruck contests with only eight hit-outs to show for it. Not a day that Big Boy will want to remember anytime soon.
Tom Mitchell – 8/10
A quiet third term where he only registered seven touches, but had 32 across the other three quarters to finish the game with 39. In our top two for metres gained, tackles, clearances and contested possessions, he certainly tried hard all day. Incredible to think our midfield got slaughtered despite his dominance - and to all those supporters calling for Titch to be traded, LOOK ELSEWHERE. Just a consummate professional and been consistently excellent all season.
Dylan Moore – 4.5/10
Moore’s game was a tale of two halves. We gave him an 8/10 for the first half and a 1/10 for the second - giving him an aggregate 4.5/10 for the match. Was our best player early kicking the opening goal of the game and involved in everything. Finished the first half with 15 touches and the goal, before only getting it four times for the whole second half - reflective of how our entire team just seemed to fall away after the main break. Still, not the worst of our players and showed enough in the first half to again show how far he has come in 2021.
Conor Nash – 2/10
Sixteen touches for the game at 50% disposal efficiency. I guess that’s an improvement when his first four touches went straight to opposition players. You feel for Nash again being named on ball but playing up forward for three quarters, but the Irishman just wasn’t really up to it when put into the middle either. No doubt Mitch has his thoughts so will be interesting to see if he retains his spot in the team next week.
Jaeger O’Meara – 1/10
Absolute mare of a game for JOM. Had six touches with three free kicks against to half time, and only added another eight disposals in the second half. When you are getting smashed in the middle your key mids need to be scrutinised, and as a leader of the club you’d expect much much more. Finished 41st out of 45 players for metres gained. Just so you know it wasn’t a typo, he finished 41st out of 45 players for metres gained. Still baffled by all the jungle drums beating at the start of the year calling for him to be captain. Has now notched another game under his belt where he’s gone missing when we needed him to stand up the most.
Tom Phillips – 2.5/10
Could just be the greatest Box Hill footballer that has yet to play a game for Box Hill. We just might not have the depth required to drop him, but how he is still getting a game in the seniors is one for Brad to answer on Thursday morning. Ended the game with 17 touches - he is one of those players that could still be very good in a good team, but in games where we are getting done he is glaringly being found out.
Jack Scrimshaw – 3/10
Another casualty on the day and of our backline, Scrimma was subbed at half time thanks to an errant arm to the head from his own captain. Wasn’t having a great day until that point of time and will at a minimum miss next week’s match due to the AFL’s concussion protocols. Was sorely missed in the second half, especially with Hardwick withdrawing pre-game and CJ going down. We missed his composure and drive out of defence.
Liam Shiels – 4/10
Working himself into the game as it wore on, Pup gathered 22 touches going at 90% disposal efficiency. But he just did not damage the opposition whatsoever and was in our bottom five players for metres gained on the ground. Ever reliable and sitting fourth in average disposals for the season, this game was reflective of where he sits on our list - experienced campaigner that will play a role bridging the gap as part of the current rebuild. Will be one of the players that you think Mitch will be having an honest chat with before he officially takes over the reigns from Clarko.
James Worpel – 3.5/10
Only eight touches to half time, Worps came out with intent in the third term kicking the opening goal with a snap from 30 metres out. Finished the day with 18 but only managed five contested possessions. Also finished with four clangers including a couple of abysmal kicks straight to opponents. Part of the problem outside of Titch, where the rest of our midfield are just not contributing enough.
"young" Ned Reeves is the same age as Sean Darcy, btw
