The news has now been dropped that this weekend’s game against the GWS Giants has been moved from Sydney to Melbourne.
And while on face value it is great news for the Hawks players and Melbourne-based fans alike, it opens up a number of questions that will hopefully be clarified on Wednesday.
Whose home game is it?
Will the Giants still lay claim to being the home team on Sunday?
Will all Hawthorn members have access to tickets through their membership?
Will it be a replacement game for the Essendon game that was moved to Tasmania last weekend?
Will the Hawks get to use their traditional rooms or do the GWS get first choice as the home team?
Does ‘Hawka’ get a guernsey if it’s an away game?
If previous games at the MCG are anything to go by, you needn’t be too worried about access to tickets - even if there is a 25% crowd capacity whacked on to the venue.
In the past three matches we have played against the Giants at the ‘G, our crowds have been 14,636, 17,906 and 26,518 back in 2012.
Our record
Finally a bit of luck has fallen our way after what was a HORROR run of fixturing for the club in 2020.
Having played both Sydney sides in Sydney, Adelaide sides in Adelaide and Perth sides in Perth last year, we were due some acknowledgement from the footballing gods, and here it is.
After having last week’s game moved away from the MCG to Launceston (a theoretical disadvantage for the Bombers), we now no longer need to travel to GIANTS Stadium - a venue where we are 0-6.
Instead, the Giants need to come to our home, where they have a 0-3 record against us - so maybe, just maybe, we are all of a sudden a genuine chance at claiming a big scalp.
Credit must go to GWS who were apparently offered to have the game played at a neutral ground, but have no fears and very much encouraged the game being played at the MCG.
We suspect we would have been just as happy playing the match in Canberra 😉.
