A record crowd ... or was it?

Last weekend's 93,211 crowd for the Richmond game was officially Hawthorn's biggest home-and-away crowd in history. But some are not so sure.

Last Saturday at the MCG was a massive day at the MCG for all sorts of reasons.

Who knew Changkuoth Jiath’s 50th game would drag 92,311 fans through the gates, making it the eight-largest home-and-away crowd in history!

It was the biggest crowd ever for a home-and-away game not played on either Anzac Day or the King’s/Queen’s Birthday.

There has been a bit scepticism about whether the MCC/AFL/Richmond ‘added a bit of mayo’ to the crowd figure but having been there last Saturday and at so many of the big games at the MCG, it really was packed.

You know the crowd figure is going to be massive when…

  • You are not permitted to save seats for latecomers in the MCC Reserve;

  • They issue tickets for the standing areas of the MCC Reserve (and by the way, who was the prominent Hawthorn supporter who had to move because he didn’t have a ticket to the aforementioned standing area?); and

  • When the nose-bleed sections at the top of Level 4 are also fully occupied.

And so it proved.

Officially, it was also the largest home-and-away crowd the Hawks have played in front of.

Or was it?
